Anwar Mekhayech is co-founder of the acclaimed, multi-disciplinary global design studio, DesignAgency, where he shares the helm with partners Allen Chan and Matt Davis. Each contributes a unique vision to the company’s creative strategy and ideation of guest experience in the hospitality, residential development and retail industries.
Anwar developed a first-hand knowledge of hospitality through being close to his family business and later as a restauranteur. This experience, combined with his passion for travel, community, art and culture contribute to his creative thinking, practical solutions, and his considered perspective.
Thriving on collaboration with both client and creatives, Anwar has worked closely with notable visionaries, helping them to develop environments that reflect a unique brand ethos. This emphasis on shared expertise is exemplified in Generator Hostels, for which Anwar and DesignAgency worked with many architects and artists to creatively realize properties in 11 cities across Europe before the sale to Queensgate Investments from Patron Capital for €450 million in 2017.
Since then, Anwar has lead hotel and restaurant projects globally, including working with Momofuku and notably David Chang for the past eight years, opening restaurants in Toronto, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and with new sites in New York launching next year.
DesignAgency is also working as strategic development consultants and lead designers globally with various brands under the Marriott and Hilton names; recently helping to launch Motto a new micro-hotel for Hilton. In December The Dalmar Hotel ( A Starwood Tribute hotel) is launching in Fort Lauderdale and the first St Regis Hotel in Canada opens in Toronto.
Anwar is also a partner in Toronto-based ARTHOUSE, a boutique photography agency and production house, where he takes a behind-the-scenes role in business development and strategy.
